History of Sankthansaften:

The celebration of Sankthansaften (aka Jonsok) in the bright summer night before June 24 marks the birth of John the Baptist and also the summer solstice, when the sun reaches the highest point in the sky and turn towards the winter solstice. Midsummer's Eve. The bonfire to expel evil spirits has roots back to the 4th century when Pagan and Christian traditions started to merge into becoming one celebration.
